Gene Starkey, Sensei-San, 79, of Niwot, passed away on February 17, 2017. He was born to Boyd and Frances (Hanson) Starkey. Gene grew up in Greeley and graduated in 1956 from Greeley Central. In 1964, Gene graduated from UNC, married LaRaine Starkey (Koehler) from Brush, and was accepted into a Doctorate program at Penn State, where he and LaRaine had their daughter, Heather Starkey.
Gene worked as an electrical engineer for over 35 years. He had numerous hobbies: photography, radio astronomy, cooking, car racing, building sound systems, running marathons and he always ran the Boulder - Boulder race. His latest passion was martial arts. He had achieved a 4th degree black belt in Korean & American Tang Soo Do (Kung Fu). At age 67, Gene became recognized as Sensei-San and a Black Belt Instructor of ‘American Hard Style’ Japanese Swordsmanship in Boulder, Co. He loved teaching and he loved all of his students.
Gene died surrounded by loved ones, He fought his debilitating illness (Subnucular Palsy) like a true warrior to the very end.
Gene is survived by his daughter, Heather (Chris) Starkey - McKee; grandchildren, Colin, Kara of Greeley; brother, Mike (Pam) Starkey of Camarillo, CA.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Linda (Greg) Headlee of Greeley.
A celebration of life for Gene is scheduled on March 24, 2017 at 09:00 am at Northern Colorado Crematory, 700 8th St, Greeley, Colorado.
