Gary Robert Akin, 70, of Greeley, Colorado was called home by his Lord and Savior on June 7, 2019, after a short illness. He was born in Denver, Colorado on November 9, 1948 to Robert and Jean Akin. Soon after his brother Ron arrived. Later the marriage dissolved, leaving Robert with two young sons. When Robert married Lois Curry, she became mother to the boys and then a third son, Craig, was added to the mix. The boys enjoyed growing up together in Greeley, spending many summers at Hillside Pool on the swim team or as lifeguards. Gary excelled at swimming, taking 1st at state in breaststroke during high school.
Gary’s love of cars became apparent at an early age. Even though he was too young to own his own car, he became an honorary member of the Ignitors Car Club, sharing many great stories and memories about that time.
In 1966, Gary graduated from Greeley High School. He wandered to California and Florida before attending the University of Nebraska where he studied history. He met and married Missy Barrow and had three children, Tyler, and twins Heather and Wendy. The family moved back to Greeley where Gary formed his own residential construction company before divorcing.
Gary met and married Vicki Dick in 1984. They shared lots of interests, going “all in” for each activity. Whether it was softball tournaments or sail boating, alone or with lots of friends, they did it with joy and laughter.
In 2007, Gary was instrumental in re-igniting the Ignitors Car Club and proudly displayed and told endless stories about his restored 65 Cobra, 47 Vicky, and 55 Chevy. He also presented his cars at many shows in Northeastern Colorado, along the Front Range, and even up into South Dakota.
Gary volunteered to be a Wrangler for the Greeley Stampede, and was voted rookie of the year his very first year. In his 5 years as a Wrangler, Gary rapidly advanced within the rankings to Ramrod, one of the highest positions held in outside security.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife Vicki; son Tyler (wife, Lindsay) and daughters Scarlett and Aviana; daughter Heather (husband, Andy) and children Avery, Zach, and Zoe; and daughter Wendy; brother Ron (wife, Beth) and daughter Kristin and Emery; mother-in-law Christine Dick and Vicki's siblings and spouses, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his dad Robert, mother Lois, and brother Craig.
Gary lived a full, wonderful life and was always smiling and happy. He surrounded himself with friends and family and would not want anyone to spend much time grieving, but to grab a Lonestar, a cheeseburger and celebrate life until he sees you again.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday June 22 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3000 35th Ave, Greeley, CO.
