Shaw, Dale Garratt – On Saturday November 16, 2019, in his 78th year, Dale passed away with family by his side and embraced in love.
Dale’s story began in Canada on May 31, 1941 but was primarily written in Greeley, Colorado where he grew up, raised his family, spent the majority of his 43-year teaching career, and lived out his “golden” retirement years in the multi-level home he knew down to the last stud.
Despite advanced degrees in math and statistics, teacher of the year awards and too many tennis trophies to count, perhaps his most significant achievement came during graduate school at Kansas State University when his crisp wit, charm, and at least 100 computer punch card love notes successfully wooed the love of his life, Rosie Kordonowy. After a lengthy courtship (90 days), the two were married; a loving partnership that blossomed continuously for the next 54 years.
To know Dale was to witness that the best use of life is love, and the best expression of love is time; Dale made time for everyone. As a husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, neighbor, colleague, and friend he created an ocean of memories born from thoughtful engagement and genuine concern for others.
So whether your enduring memories of Dale include a rendition of Great Balls of Fire that made piano strings quiver, his eye-wateringly infectious laugh, a friendly wave from the porch, a novel solution to a particularly vexing problem, or simply that gentle comment that showed his support and helped you navigate life, remember this: when recently asked if he wanted to check anything else off his bucket list he replied “I can’t think of anything because I’ve lived that list every day of my life.”
…indeed a purpose-driven life well-lived, that we were all lucky to experience.
We love you, Dale.
